Troda in Concert

Troda in Concert

Venue: Old Library Car Park Society Street Ballinasloe, 2.30 Pm to 4.30 PM
Admission/Táille: Free

Hailing from Dublin, Derry and Glasgow respectively, Kevin Meehan (Whistles), Jack Warnock (Guitars/Vocals) and Eamonn Nugent (Bodhrán) make up TRODA. This exciting trio, encompasses traditional and newly composed tunes, along with contemporary arrangements of traditional songs in both English and Irish.

With each member of the band already well established in their own right, this exciting and dynamic trio formed after a spontaneous concert in Co Cavan in 2018, it became clear very quickly that a unique sound was being created and so TRODA was born.

The band’s initial debut was met with a standing ovation which in turn prompted the release of their eponymous CD, ‘TRODA’. (2019) creating what can be described as a natural sound “with an edge”. They look forward to launching this CD around Ireland in late 2019.

All Ireland U-18 Fiddle Competition

Venue: Scoil an Croi Naofa, Society Street, 4 pm
Admission/Táille: 10 Euro

This will be our 4th year running the U-18 All Ireland Fiddle Competition. There is a cash Prize and Trophy and perpeutual cup for the Winner. There is a cash prize and medal for the runner up.

In the last number of years we have had winners from Clare, Laois and Dublin.

This year we are delighted to have Dylan Carlos returning for the weekend. He will be judging the fiddle competition as well as taking part in some sessions. Dylan comes from a very musical family in Co Roscommon. Having grown up in the home of flute playing, Dylan took the road less travelled for a Rossie and took up the fiddle, but is still heavily influenced by the music in his local area. A member of the Knocknashee Ceili Band, Dylan also subs in with the group Gatehouse from time to time. He also performs and teaches regularly at festivals and workshops around the country and abroad, having played at festivals in England and France in recent months.

Carlos Sweeney Mc Cartin CD Launch

Carlos Sweeney Mc Cartin CD Launch

Venue: The Auld Sod Dunloe Street Ballinasloe, 6.30-8.30
Admission/Táille: Free

A long awaied CD from Dylan Carlos, Cein Sweeney and John Mc Cartin takes place in the Auld Sod bar Dunloe street Ballinasloe from 6.30pm to 8.30 pm. It promises to be a great evening. It is fair to say that I have been very much looking forward to this album. Having had the privilege of a preview, I can confirm that my excitement was justified listening to the 12 tracks of the finest pure-drop Traditional Music. If our music in some way reflects who we are as people, then this album demonstrates the intelligence, diligence, energy and good humour of Dylan, Cein and John. Like the album itself, time in the company of these three sound men both enlightens and entertains in equal measure!

I am delighted to hear how well Dylan is playing on this album. His playing is a joy to listen to and this comes from him showing the dedication required to become a master of his craft. It is also clear that many years of playing in Cryan's Teach Ceoil with a flute-player of Mick Mulvey's caliber has helped that process hugely. Dylan does of course have a fine pedigree being the son of John, who undoubtedly is one of the best flute players Roscommon has ever produced. Most of Dylan's teenage years were under the guidance of Mossie Martin and it was clear to me that Mossie did an outstanding job when I was in the lucky position to take over from Mossie. Mossie and I learned our music from Seamus Thompson so I think all 3 of us owe... a debt of gratitude to the generosity of Seamus. There is no doubting that Dylan's playing here does all of us proud!
